Shadow Moon and Mr. Wednesday’s journey will enjoy a long run at Starz.

While speaking at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, Starz chief executive officer and president Chris Albrecht said to show will continue “as long as the show makes sense for Starz.” According to The Tracking Board, he added “We see no end in sight.”

Debuting in late April, the show’s first season ran for eight episodes and introduced audiences to Shadow Moon, a broken ex-con and widower who takes a job with the mysterious con man Mr. Wednesday. As the two traveled around middle America collecting people, Shadow soon discovered his deceased wife was back from the dead — after a fashion — and that he was part of a world of nearly-forgotten gods. Also, Wednesday is really the day’s namesake. Oh, and he’s hoping to do battle with the new gods of America.

Neil Gaiman, American Gods

Based on the book by Neil Gaiman, the show was developed by TV wunderkind Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. “The vision of Neil Gaiman is the guiding light for all of us and Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have been terrific interpreters or translators of that vision,” said Albrecht.

Unfortunately, he could not offer an approximate time for the show’s return. “It’s a difficult show to do, a lot of people to wrangle, so I can’t tell you exactly when the next season is going to be on the air,” he said. Fuller is developing a reboot of Amazing Stories, but likely considers the Starz series his primary job. He walked away from Star Trek: Discovery to focus on the first season of American Gods. And considering how quickly Starz renewed the program, it is fair to guess the second season may debut around the same time next year. At least, it’s as good a guess as any until the premium channel offers more.

Meanwhile, the first season of American Gods is available on the Starz app.
