Spider-Man: Homecoming is a funny movie. If you are looking for dark nights, this is not the movie for you. Up until the third act, the movie is mostly played towards laughs. That is not to say there isn’t suspense. There are more than a few “hold your breath” moments during the film.

Not to give away too many spoilers but Spider-Man: Homecoming starts with Peter Parker’s interpretation of the event in Captain America: Civil War and what happens there after. If you are 15 years old and just finished fighting side by side with the Avengers, how do you manage your expectations with the drudgery of high school? Tom Holland is completely convincing as the nerdy and earnest Peter Parker. His joyfulness while being able to use his remarkable abilities is palpable.

Jon Favreau has a lot of screen time and plays the role of a third tier assistant to a multi-billionaire to the hilt. Robert Downey Jr. wears Tony Stark like a pair of comfortable shoes. Depending on if you count the NBA Finals commercial, Spider-Man: Homecoming is Downey’s eighth or ninth time playing Tony Stark. The only person I can think of, right off the bat who has recently played the same character so many times (and did not attend Hogwarts) is Judi Dench’s portrayal of M in the James Bond films.

It should come as no surprise that Michael Keaton’s take on the Vulture is terrific. He clearly doesn’t see Adrian Tomes as being a villain but rather as a business man trying to get by. A victim of the 1%. Interesting note, the Vulture was the first super-villain Spider-Man faced in comics, way back in Amazing Spider-Man #2. The back-up story in that issue has Spider-Man fighting the Terrible Tinkerer. See if you can spot him in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Marisa Tomei’s version of Aunt May was pitch perfect. She wants to give Peter the space he needs to grow up while she copes with her own PTSD from the death of Uncle Ben. It would have been great to see more of her in this film although her presence, plot wise is guaranteed for the next movie.

The rest of the ensemble of actors portraying his classmates were, for the most part, able to convey more just being two dimensional characters. Jacob Batalon was the geekiest best friend a person could ask for. The normally radiance of actress and fashion model, Zendaya is deliberately muted for her role of Michelle. Laura Harrier as Liz is also the kind of person you wish attended your school.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a fun filed romp for the entire family. Anyone familiar with the comics should see it more than once to catch all the Easter eggs hidden in it. Even though this is movie was produced by Sony/Columbia Pictures, stay through to the end of the credits for a special message.
