TOP 10 GREATEST RIVALRIES IN DC COMICS!!!
10. SHAZAM & BLACK ADAM
This feud is given the #10 spot because the rivalry is mostly one-sided. Black Adam hates SHAZAM because of his banishment issues with the Wizard Shazam not because of Billy Batson or his alter ego. Neither Billy or SHAZAM have actually ever done anything to Black Adam to deserve the ferocity that Black Adam attacks him with. Their battles are epic though. Black Adam, empowered by the Egyptian pantheon, has the stamina of (S)hu, the speed of (H)eru, the strength of (A)mon, the wisdom of (Z)ehuti, the power of (A)ton and the courage of (M)ehen. Whilst SHZAM is empowered by the Greek pantheon (& 1 Jewish king): the wisdom of (S)olomon, the strength of (H)ercules, the stamina of (A)tlas, the power of (Z)eus, the courage of (A)chiles and the speed of (M)ercury. So their fights are basically pantheon vs pantheon.
9. WONDER WOMAN & CHEETAH
These two have been through many incarnations over the decades. But one thing that stays consistent in all their iterations is that they fight one another with great fury and passion. Cheetah is in many ways Wonder Woman’s Joker or Lex Luthor having attacked her numerous times. With Cheetah’s fast reflexes, acrobatics, claws and super-strength she is definitely a match for Wonder Woman and, while Wonder Woman typically wins, it is never easy and she knows she’s been in a fight when it’s over. That’s impressive in my book.
9. SWAMP THING & ANTON ARCANE
These two have opposed one another since their earliest days (Swamp Thing vol 1 #2 — Vertigo). Anton Arcane is the avatar of the Rot just as Alec Holland is avatar of the Green. The Green being about life and renewal and the Rot being about death and decay, they obviously couldn’t be greater opposites. Though, as Swamp Thing learns, the Rot is just as much a part of nature as the Green – but there must be balance. As the avatar of the Rot, Anton Arcane could manipulate rot, death and decay to his will. He main objective was to simply help the spread of rot but he caused a wave of carnage as he thought that killing was the best sacrifice for the Rot. He then found a way of allowing rot in a living being, causing decay before death. When Swamp Thing and Animal Man are trapped within the Rot Arcane uses this ‘living’ rot on everyone except those who have a strong enough connection to the Red (animals) or the Green (plants), such as Poison Ivy or Man-Bat. Anton also has an army of Un-Men – those who gave themselves to the Rot willingly. There are ways to prevent the living rot, such as using the Man-Bat serum, but only if used before being completely controlled by it. These rot zombies can be weakened or even killed with Alec Holland’s bio-restorative formula.
7. HAL JORDAN & THAAL SINESTRO
Thaal Sinestro. Before Hal Jordan came along, he was the greatest of all Green Lanterns in the Corps. Though Sinestro’s success in protecting his sector and earning this title was owed to fear and facsist dictatorship, particularly on his home planet of Korugar. When Jordan, who was being trained by Sinestro, saw how he was keeping order in his sector Hal reported Sinestro to the Guardians and Sinestro was stripped of his ring and banished. This ignited a feud that burned hot and bright for decades, especially after the Weaponer forged Sinestro a power ring that was feuled by fear like the Green Lantern ring is powered by will.
6. SUPERMAN & BRAINIAC
Yes Superman has tremendous strength and durability, he can fly, he has heat-vision, cold breath and super speed. All this is true. But, the mind is the greatest weapon of all. It is the mind that puts all of those super-powers to use. Without the mind we are vegetables. Brainiac has a “12th-level intellect”, allowing calculation abilities, enhanced memory and advanced understanding of mechanical engineering, bio-engineering, physics, and other theoretical and applied sciences, as well as extensive knowledge of various alien technologies. Brainiac has created devices such as a force field belt and a shrinking ray capable of reducing cities so small they fit in a jar. Brainiac’s advanced mental powers have shown him capable of possessing others, absorbing information from other beings, transferring his consciousness, creating and manipulating computer systems, replicating multiple versions of himself, and exerting powers to traverse or control space and time. Brainiac also possesses the abilities of telepathy and telekinesis that are further augmented by an implanted electrode head-piece. Among organic beings, Brainiac views only his frequent partner Lex Luthor as a peer intellect. What does Superman do when the battle is with his mind and not with his fists? This is what makes this feud so great.
5. BATMAN & HUSH
Hush aka Tommy Elliott, a childhood friend of Bruce Watne’s, was the mastermind behind Commissioner Gordon’s downfall and Carmine Falcone’s return. If that wasn’t enough Thomas Elliott injected Alfred with fear toxin and later turned public opinion against Wayne Enterprises by blowing up one of Batman’s hidden weapon caches below Gotham, killing an unknown number of civilians, policemen and military personnel. He was able to enter the cache with DNA taken from Alfred Pennyworth. After having blown up another weapon cache and having been shot through the shoulder with a grappling hook by Julia Pennyworth, Hush gave up his location to Batman to face him in a final showdown. They met and fought in a weapon cache below the Martha Wayne Foundation hospital, which Hush had rigged to explode as a backup plan. Batman defeated Hush, but was then informed that the government had seized control of Wayne Enterprises and its holdings due to its involvement in the catastrophic explosions around Gotham. Hush then taunted Batman, stating, “Maybe you’re right Bruce, maybe I’m not you. But right now, who would want to be?”
4. AQUAMAN & BLACK MANTA
There have been 2 Black Mantas. A father and a son. The father, the first Black Manta, hated the cold, emotionless sea and everything about it and he felt that Aquaman was the personification of that sea and so he hated him down to his last cell. The original Black Manta was Aquaman’s greatest foe and he did many terrible, horrible things during his life. Black Manta even went as far as to kill Aquaman and Mera’s baby! But still, Aquaman would not kill him, at least not on purpose. Aquaman did kill the original Black Manta by accident while retaliating for Black Manta attacking Aquaman’s father. Seeking revenge, the original Black Manta’s son – having taken up the Black Manta mantle – attempted to kill all of Aquaman’s family and friends. Lots of blood, violence and death marks the chapters in this historic, generation-spanning feud.
3. SUPERMAN & LEX LUTHOR
This is the most classic of rivalries. Since Action Comics #23 in 1940 – that’s 77 years! It’s the age old story of brains versus brawn, amorality versus strength of character. What Luthor never seems to estimate properly is how incorruptible Superman is or just how much brains Superman has with his brawn. Granted, Kal-El is not as smart as Luthor, but few men or aliens are considered intellectual peers by Brainiac, and Luthor is. Still, Superman is far from stupid. He has access to Kryptonian files containing knowledge from thousands of worlds. But Luthor has not just made it an intellectual war. No, Lex has built suits that enable him to go toe to toe with the Man of Steel. He’s also created villains like Bizarro and Metallo – powered by kryptonite – and made organizations like the Legion of Doom to fight Superman for him.
2. THE FLASH & REVERSE-FLASH (EOBARD THAWNE)
Reverse-Flash has done many terrible things to The Flash and the people he loves. Things like murdering the revived Johnny Quick, as well as being responsible for every tragedy that has occurred in Barry’s life, including the death of his mother and the subsequent framing of Barry’s father for the murder. Thawne decides to ruin Barry’s life during his childhood, erasing his best friend from existence to result in greater introversion on Barry’s part, and various other torments, some even unknown. Very few archenemies traverse time to mess up their foe’s lives. That is hardcore and psychologically terrifying.
1. BATMAN & JOKER
The Joker has killed hundreds and terrorized Gotham City more times than I think even DC could count. The Joker shot and paralyzed Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl and tortured her father Commissioner James Gordon, he beat Jason Todd nigh unto death with a crowbar and then blew him up, and then later orchestrated almost every tragedy and life changing event in Jason Todd’s life, essentially creating the Red Hood and pitting him against Batman. The Joker tormented the whole Bat-Family, turned the Justice League on Batman and ultimately killed Bruce Wayne – if not for the life regenerating pool next to him. In Batman’s own words he says that there isn’t a day that goes by that he doesn’t think about capturing Joker and making him pay in blood and pain and ultimately death for his long list of atrcities.
