The artwork on X-O Manowar (2017) #4 by Doug Braithwaite was good. There is a good amount of detail and the layouts were great – plenty of back and foreground images brought the alien world of Gorin to life. The layouts were particularly impressive because they were more than props on a set. The back and foreground images were world expanding. The battle scenes were also impressive. I love me some gore and Braithwaite brought it. And the colors!!! OMG, the coloring in this issue was amazing and a perfect compliment to Braithwaite’s artwork. Diego Rodriguez’ colors just explode off the page in a fire of brilliance and beauty. Rodriguez utilized different shades and blends to create a whole addition layer of detail and dimension to the panels. The lettering by Dave Sharpe was good, but I found the letters to be a bit on the small font side – at least on the first page. I was shocked to experience this as it’s the first time I’ve ever had a complaint about Sharpe’s work. And beyond that I didn’t have any complaints. Sharpe guides us through the panels and pages quite well through the rest of the book.

Writer, Matt Kindt, did a great job on the story and the dialogue. The characters felt real and their interactions were organic. I really liked seeing a different side to Aric. Kindt has made him the king he was always meant to be. Aric has grown up a lot since 402 AD and Kindt shows that well in Aric’s wisdom and humility. On the planet of Gorin, Aric, who is reluctant to use his armor and has fashioned it into a ring, finds himself and his people in the middle of a war between the Cadmium and the Azure. Aric has joined the Azure and is quickly climbing the ranks of their army. After a successful attack on the Cadmium Imperial City, Aric has earned his place. But his mission is not over. The Cadmium President has escaped and Aric must track him down.
