Character Biography (Valiant Entertainment)

10,000 years ago, in the city of Ur, Gilad Anni-Padda was dead. He had been killed on an adventure to the Far Away with his brothers Ivar and Aram. But he did not stay dead. The grief stricken Ivar Anni-Padda became convinced that The Boon that he and his brothers brought back from the Far Away could resurrect Gilad. And, despite the valiant attempt by Aram Anni-Padda to stop him, Ivar turned the Boon on. However things did not turn out as he had hoped. All life on Earth was annihilated, save for Ivar, Aram and Gilad. It was not the Boon that saved Gilad however. He was instead granted immortality by Earth herself. Now, when in danger, Earth calls for her Eternal Warrior through her Geomancers – a line of mystics chosen by the Book of the Geomancers to be the voice of the planet – to prevent calamities and mete out justice, but ultimately to ensure the survival of Earth. The Geomancers and Gilad, as the Fist and the Steel of Earth, work together to do the bidding of the Earth. Now he fights a greater eternal war with the forces of Nergal, a death god opposed by the earth, and the nihilistic cult called the Null. While locked in battle with the forces of Nergal, Gilad lost his son Mitu at the hands of his own daughter, Xaran. In the wake of his loss, Gilad continued to fight for the Earth, but with grave misgivings. Eventually after centuries of doubt, Gilad abdicated his post as Earth’s defender, electing instead to deliver justice on his own terms. It was only when Xaran, long thought dead, returned that Gilad was called back into service of the Earth-a call he rejected by distorting the House of Earth’s California headquarters. However, he soon learned that his attack had unintended consequences. . . and that he will have no choice but to return to the Earth’s service if the world is to stand any chance against the return of Nergal in two thousand years time. But on a smaller scale Gilad Anni-Padda also fights with the team, Unity, comprised of Gilad, Livewire, Ninjak and X-O Manowar. The team was originally formed by Toyo Harada under an altruistic guise of dealing with the arrival of Aric of Dacia and his people showing up in a spaceship in Romania, but his true colors were quickly revealed and his connection to the team was severed. They now operate without him. Later, in 4001 AD, Gilad, going by the name: Eternal Emperor, is the ruler and protector of refugees from New Japan and works with Rai and the Geomancers to save the people of Earth.

The Eternal Warrior is my favorite Valiant Comics character. He is a bad ass, this is true. But he has also allowed the winds and currents of time to shape and mold him into a wise ruler and advisor. If you love history like I do Gilad has an instant draw. He has fought thousands of battles and dealt with betrayal on a monumental scale. But his own conscience proved to be his greatest battle. That’s it right there. That’s what draws me to him: Gilad is not just the greatest warrior to ever live, he has depth of soul and mind. I love that in a character.
