Talon vol 1: scourge of the Owls

The artwork of Talon vol. 1: Scourge of the Owls by Guillem March was spectacular. But it is his inking that really impressed me. Nice, tight precise lines. Very tasteful and effective thick shading that makes the rest of the art really pop out. Tomeu Morey’s coloring really added to this too. His use of color and definition is top shelf work. Really, you can’t do a better job. I like in particular his use of whites. A lot of colorists avoid white but Morey embraces it.

The story of Talon vol. 1: Scourge of Owls by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV was awesome. I couldn’t put the book down. Great action shots and choreography throughout. There’s a nice level of suspense as well. I love the main character, Casey Rose, but not as much as I like the sick and twisted, gargantuan of a Talon the Court of Owls sends after him. These characters are real and in your face. A well written story from end to end.

Calvin Rose aka Talon was trained from childhood to be a Talon and an escape artist by the Court and Haley’s Circus. But Calvin Rose rebelled against his former masters, the Court of Owls, and went AWOL. But Batman recently took down the Court in Gotham and Calvin Rose sees a chance to go home at long last. But the Court of Owls is not quite as beaten and broken as was previously assumed. Calvin Rose is jumping right into the middle of Hell on Earth. I fully recommend this book to any fan of the Court of Owls. It picks up right after the City of Owls storyline. It expands the Court and shows how little Batman did to quell the Owls.
