The art of Superman Unchained by Jim Lee, Dustin Nguyen and Scott Williams is first rate. But this is to be expected with a team like that. Jim Lee likes to use thin, straight lines to depict action and for shading. It’s not my favorite style but I cannot deny its effectiveness. I do like the tight, crisp artwork that stands out throughout the book. The panels and pages are detailed, but not cluttered, utilizing great fore and background elements that add to the depth of the finished work. The colors by Alex Sinclair and John Kalisz show a clear knowledge of human form. They utilize great multicolored shading techniques that really bring life to the panels. These effect are all amplified by the increased size of the deluxe edition.

The story of Superman Unchained by the fabulous Scott Snyder (Swamp Thing, Batman, Batman Eternal) is a perfectly paced masterpiece. Snyder has a knack for great, informative and story building dialog and Superman Unchained is no exception. Snyder is able to have multiple levels of things going on without being convoluted. He mixes known history with new insight and events. The amazing thing is how he is able to do this seamlessly. The story doesn’t feel forced. It’s like the new elements were there all along but we just hadn’t seen them.

Several decades before Superman started the dawn of the Superhero Age there was another champion of Earth. Another, extremely powerful being, who also fell from the skies, took part in many of the US’s darkest secrets and moments. But this former champion has some kind of connection to Lois Lane’s father, General Sam Lane and a techno-terrorist group with links to the past. Plus, Lex Luthor has plans to take down the Superman once and for all. Can the Man of Steel survive all of this? One thing is for sure: only one champion will be standing in the end.
